Learn how to make Oriental Chicken Dish. Most ingredients are already in your pantry!
I was in my favorite favorite place with Anakin, at the grocery and we were buying meat at Monterey. He happened to be at the front of the Oriental Chicken Wings (which is one of our favorite even if Monterey’s version was a bit spicy). He then asked why it is called Oriental Chicken and what makes it oriental.
I really didn’t know so I just explained that Oriental means east, and us being a child of the orient, our cuisine is often labeled as oriental. But in this specific recipe, means “of Chinese origin”.
Maybe because it has this explosion of flavor that is often associated with Chinese, having ginger, and five spice powder, and at the same time a bit sweet and salty.
Anyway, here is the recipe. This is a mainstay on our weekly menu because its so easy -I know! I always say easy. But mostly because I only feature easy on this blog, lol. Most of the ingredients are available in a Pinoy housewife’s pantry, except maybe rice wine and sesame oil, which I suggest you buy because they’re so useful for creating different flavors for the usual Pinoy dishes.
Oriental Chicken Recipe
- 1 whole chicken, cut into serving portions
- 1/3 cup soy sauce
- 1 tbsp minced onion
- 1/4 tsp five-spice powder
- 2 tsp finely sliced ginger
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1 1/2 tbsp rice wine
- 2 cups water
- 2 tsp sesame oil
- Rub chicken with salt. Marinate in soy sauce for 30 minutes.
- Put chicken in a pan together with the onion, five-spice powder, ginger, sugar, rice wine and the excess marinade. Add water then bring to a boil.
- Lower heat and simmer for about 25 to 30 minutes or until mixture thickens and chicken is tender.
- Turns chicken pieces about halfway through the cooking time to produce an even color.
- Add sesame oil.
