Can you make crepes with pancake mix?
When you think of crepes, you probably think its hard to make, because it’s served in French restaurants and so sosyal. Hahaha. Kidding. Still, they’re so elegant and delicious, so it’s gotta be hard, right? Trying to make homemade crepes from scratch can be intimidating and sometimes result in uneven, misshapen pancakes.
But you know? You can actually make a crepe recipe with pancake mix. Were you surprised? With this simple recipe using pancake mix as a shortcut, you’ll impress your family with perfect restaurant-style crepes in no time!
I knew it was somehow possible but it was an untested assumption until the Maya Hotcake experiment.
What are Crepes?
Crepes are invented in France and they are famous for being delicately thin. The crepe gets its name from the Latin word “crispa,” or “curled”—because of the curling edges of the cake when cooked properly.
Today we’re using Maya Pancake (Hotcake) Mix to make crepes with pancake mix. It’s easy, but you might need a non-stick pan in order to successfully do it. You can make it just like you make pancakes or hotcakes, the only difference being very careful to make a thin one and not as fluffy as the pancake. There shouldn’t be any lumps and there shouldn’t be any tears on the crepe.
3 Reasons why Pancake Mix Crepes are worth making
- Easier ingredients – Pancake mixes have already been blended perfectly to give the right consistency for thin, even crepes. All you need is milk, an egg and some oil or butter. Compared to measuring out multiple flours and liquids from scratch, this simple ingredient list is a breeze!
- Less messing – With just one mixing bowl, you can quickly combine all the ingredients and rest the batter for a few minutes before cooking. This means less dishes to wash and less chance of making mistakes that result in misshapen crepes.
- Fewer imperfections – The magic of pancake mix is that it’s already formulated to give the perfect spread and texture when cooked. So your pancake mix crepes are more likely to be thin and even, without holes or bubbles, like crepes made completely from scratch.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid when making crepes:
- •Using too much batter – Only pour 2-3 tablespoons of batter into the pan for each crepe. Any more and they will be hard to flip and won’t cook evenly.
- •Overworking the batter – Simply whisk the pancake mix and liquid ingredients together until just combined. The less you mix, the fewer air bubbles that form.
- •Improper heating – Make sure your pan is properly preheated and greased before pouring the batter. Medium heat is ideal.
