How to make homemade play dough.
As a mom, there’s nothing I hate more, (only second to stepping into little bits of Lego) than cleaning up dry play dough in between floor cracks. Ugh.
But kids win, and since I learned a long time ago not to buy play dough, I researched the internet and of course, made our own. A kilo of flour will last you a year I bet! And that’s only 50 pesos, as compared to buying a P hundred pesos or so per box of those ready made dough. Not to mention, if it comes together with those sets like pet shops or burger and baking shops, it can cost a thousand pesos or more!
At our homeschool, I let Arya do all sorts of projects in the kitchen and this is one of her favorite activities.
Here is a simple recipe. It can be pretty forgiving so don’t worry if you mess up!
Homemade Play Dough Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 Cups of Flour
- 2 Tbsp of Oil (any oil will do, coconut oil, vegetable oil, even olive oil but I use baby oil because it smells better)
- 2 TBSP Salt
- 1 Tbsp vinegar
- 1 1/2 Cup Boiling Water
Instructions:
- Mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl.
- Add oil and vinegar.
- Add hot water very carefully.
- Mix ingredients using a fork.
- When it’s not so hot anymore, you can knead the dough until its fully incorporated.
- Divide it into how many colors you would want.
- Make a hole in the middle of the balls and add your coloring. Start with several drops.
- Knead until you are satisfied with the colors. (Ask your kids to help.)
- Have fun!
Notes:
Wrap in plastic when not in use. Add a bit of hot water and baby oil if its already dry.
